A truly exceptional 300SL Gullwing for the marque connoisseur, this example comes equipped with factory rudge knock off wheels and is one of only two Gullwings which came dressed in the original colors of Ivory over Dark Green Leather…with over 200k Euros in receipts since 2010 including both the factory in Stuttgart and HK Engineering, you would be hard pressed to find a more well sorted 300SL anywhere
Delivered new in August 1955 via Belgian Mercedes-Benz agent IMA of Brussels. After initial delivery to Beligium, one of the first owners of record is Claude Le Guezec of Paris, France who is on record as a period 300SL race car driver. Later owners of record (by which time Factory Date Coded Rudge Wheels had been equipped) subsequent delivery are George T. Mayer of Mount Clemens Michigan and a Mr. Hertel of Cannes, France. In 2006 Swiss collector Pierre Mirabaud, chairman of the one of Switzerland’s most successful and oldest private banks, decided to acquire the Gullwing for historic and rally purposes. In mid-2014 it passed from Mr. Mirabaud to another Swiss collector, Nico Pronk. Pronk sold the car to the current owner (California, USA) who now offers it for sale through Scott Grundfor Company.
The factory data card shows the original exterior color was ‘Elfenbein’ (ivory, code DB 608) with DB 1073 green leather upholstery, both of which are noted on the build sheet as ‘special order’ and such a rare combination that it is 1 of only 2 300SL Gullwings delivered as such. Also specified in the build were screen washers and 1kg of spare paint. Finish was noted as ‘special high gloss paint’.
At the behest of owners Mirabaud and Pronk, the car has been gone through completely to ensure mechanical reliability and first class cosmetic presentation. This 300SL has detailed invoices on file totaling in excess of 200,000 Euros including complete mechanical overhaul by the Mercedes-Benz Factory in Stuttgart (accompanied by receipts totalling over 90,000 Euros) and repainting and retrimming to original factory exterior and interior colors in Switzerland (accompanied by receipts). Between the factory mechanical overhaul and the cosmetic reconditioning, everything was accounted for to impress upon the car equisite aesthetics and perfect mechanical operation. Since then the car has completed the Mille Miglia twice without incident as well as several shorter events. Before being shipped to the current owner in the United States, who wished for both a cosmetically sterling example along with perfect driving merits, the car was completely gone through by HK Engineering (with accompanying receipts) to make sure everything was working properly and to the highest 300SL standard possible.
This 300SL Gullwing comes in its original livery with factory rudge knock off wheels, a copy factory data card, build sheet, history file, detailed invoices, FIVA passport (‘A/3’ category, ie restored to original specification) and fitted luggage in matching green leather. It is ready for show or drive, needs nothing, and would be a perfect entrant for any rally or historic event the world over. Exceptional driving capability make this example something we ourselves would be ready to take from California to New York at a moments notice.
