The hand assembled 300S was rare and expensive. Only 560 were made from 1951- 1955. Most chrome-plated trim parts were hand made and solid brass. Parts were test-fitted to each car, then removed for final plating and reinstalled. When introduced in 1951 the 300S sold for twice the price of a Cadillac. By the final year of production, 1955 it was priced at $12,457 FOB California. This was double the price of a 300SL Gullwing.
The 300S was the Grand Touring predecessor of the modern S Class Mercedes Benz. Hand built by Mercedes most skilled craftsmen the 300S was the 540K of its day and perhaps the last vehicles built using Pre-War Mercedes craftsmanship and tradition.
